Memorial Scholarship

JOEL COFFEY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Robert “Joel” Coffey was born in Laramie, Wyoming in 1945, and graduated with honors with a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Wyoming in 1980. He became a Professional Land Surveyor in 1984 and a Professional Engineer in 1987. Joel joined the Wyoming Chapter of the National Society of Professional Engineers and served as the Wyoming Chapter President from 1990 to 1991. He was an active member of the Wyoming Engineering Society from 1983 until his death in 2004, when Joel’s son Dave took over the family engineering and surveying business. Joel considered himself lucky to live in the great state of Wyoming, and was proud to call Laramie his home. His love of the land was reflected in his love of Land Surveying. He is missed every day.

The Joel Coffey Memorial Scholarship was created to recognize the accomplishments and contributions of an honored alumnus of the University of Wyoming College of Engineering. The scholarship celebrates the life of a successful Laramie-based surveyor and civil engineer, father and friend. It is the hope of Coffey Engineering & Surveying – and the entire Coffey family – that Joel's passion and vision live on through this scholarship, which is intended to encourage and enable students to pursue excellence in civil engineering at the University of Wyoming.

University of Wyoming undergraduate students enrolled in the Civil Engineering program are eligible to apply for the Joel Coffey Memorial Scholarship.

Mrs. Dona Coffey
I graciously accept the generous Joel Coffey Memorial Engineering Scholarship. This scholarship will be put to good use as it will be applied to tuition and books for the upcoming school year. Receiving scholarships not only helps me financially as I pursue my degree, but shows that hard work pays off.
I will be finishing my junior year in Civil Engineering this spring, and hope to graduate next spring. I am planning on emphasizing in the water recourses, and I am considering going to graduate school either in civil engineering or getting a MBA.
Upon graduation I hope to start my career in Wyoming with a private engineering firm. I hope to someday open my own practice or become a partner.
Once again thank you for your generous scholarship.
Sincerely,
Justin Terfehr

Dear Mrs. Coffey,
I would like to sincerely thank you for being given the opportunity to receive the Joel Coffey Memorial Scholarship. It is a great honor that I am more than happy to accept. As you would know, I am currently a senior engineering student at the University of Wyoming and am studying Architectural Engineering. The Architectural Engineering program  can be a very difficult course to go through, which makes me appreciate the scholarship even more, and I couldn't be more grateful that I have received it. Without recognition and aid from yourself and others like you, the school of engineering at UW would not be what it is today. Again, thank you so much for your greatly appreciated support of engineering , hard work, and excellence.
Sincerely,
Chris Stearns

I am grateful for your generous scholorship and I accept the Joel Coffey Memorial Engineering Scholorship. The scholorship will be put to good use as it will be applied to my tuition for the 2009-2010 school year. Not only will this scholorship help me with the costs of going to school, but also shows me that hard work pays off. This scholorship will motivate me to continue to excel in school for the duration of my time at the University of Wyoming.
Currently I am a sophomore in Civil Engineering, and would like to specialize either in structural or water source engineering. Next year my classes will be challenging and your scholorship will allow me to concentrate on my studies rather than my finances. This scholorship will help me acheive graduation in December 2011.
Upon graduation I plan on practicing engineering in Wyoming, to better our great state for the future. I feel that Wyoming is a great place to live and raise a family.
Thank you,
Justin Terfehr
